Greetings from Kukama Wildlife College!

Winter continues to make its presence felt in the Northern Cape, but life at Kukama has been anything but quiet.

Over the past month, our students have successfully completed their FGASA examinations and are now undertaking their final practical assessment drives before graduating on 4 August 2026.

It has been a rewarding few weeks filled with learning, personal growth, unforgettable wildlife encounters and plenty of time spent in the bush.

As another intake prepares to begin the next chapter of their journey, our **Kukama Wildlife College July 2026 newsletter** brings you some of the highlights from the past month.

World Ranger Day – Honouring Africa's Conservation Rangers

31 July marks World Ranger Day, a day dedicated to recognising the remarkable men and women who work tirelessly to protect wildlife and conserve our natural heritage.

While field guides and rangers both play important roles in conservation, their responsibilities are different.

Rangers work on the front line of conservation through wildlife protection, reserve management, habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring and anti-poaching initiatives.

Field guides, in turn, educate and inspire others by sharing their knowledge of wildlife and the natural world, helping guests develop a deeper appreciation for conservation.

At Kukama Wildlife College, we are proud to train professional field guides who can become ambassadors for conservation, sharing their passion and knowledge with future generations.

To every ranger who serves with courage, dedication and commitment — thank you for protecting Africa's wild spaces.

Rewilding Continues at Olienhout Game Reserve

One of this month's highlights was the successful release of ostriches onto Olienhout Game Reserve as part of the reserve's ongoing rewilding programme.

Every species returned to its natural environment plays an important role in restoring healthy ecosystems, and each release marks another exciting milestone in the reserve's conservation journey.

Watching Olienhout continue to grow through responsible rewilding reminds us that conservation is a long-term commitment — one species, one habitat and one success story at a time.

Week Six Through Mia Fourie's Eyes

From fresh aardvark tracks and soaring Fish Eagles to spectacular sunsets across the reserve, Week Six reminded our students why they chose this journey.

Having successfully completed their FGASA examinations, the focus has now shifted to their final practical assessment drives before graduation.

With graduation taking place on 4 August, there is a real sense of excitement as this group prepares to complete their Kukama journey and take their next steps into the wildlife industry.

The bush continues to be our greatest teacher.

Adventure Beyond the Classroom

Our students recently explored Witsand Nature Reserve, famous for its magnificent white sand dunes and crystal-clear natural spring.

The day offered another opportunity to appreciate the Northern Cape's remarkable biodiversity before ending with plenty of laughter while sandboarding down the iconic white dunes.

Experiences like these strengthen friendships, create lifelong memories and deepen our students' appreciation for the incredible environments they are preparing to protect.

Graduate Spotlight: Rohan Britz

One Week Into the Wildlife Industry

Only one week into his placement in South Africa, Kukama graduate Rohan Britz is already embracing every moment.

Rohan describes his first week in the industry as being filled with highlights, new experiences and the constant surprises that make working in the bush so rewarding.

We are incredibly proud of Rohan and look forward to watching his career continue to grow.

His journey is a wonderful reminder of what practical wildlife training can lead to once students take their first steps into the industry.

Final Field Guide Course for 2026 – Starting 13 August

Our final Field Guide Course for 2026 begins on 13 August 2026.

If you've been dreaming of becoming a professional field guide or beginning a career within the wildlife industry, this is your final opportunity to join Kukama this year.

Training takes place in a real wilderness environment, where students develop practical guiding skills through immersive, field-based learning.

Applications remain open, but places are limited.
