A Winter Update from Kukama Wildlife College
Greetings from Kukama Wildlife College!
Winter has truly settled over the Northern Cape, bringing crisp mornings, welcome rain, and plenty of adventure for our June 2026 student intake. Despite the colder weather, our students have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, continuing to grow in confidence while developing practical wildlife and conservation skills in the unique environment of Olienhout Game Reserve.
As July draws to a close, we are also celebrating a milestone that means a great deal to everyone involved in the Kukama journey.
One Year Since the First Student Joined Kukama Wildlife College
On 31 July 2025, Kukama Wildlife College welcomed its very first student, Cavin Kirchmann, to the Wildlife Research and Monitoring Course.
At that time, Kukama was still a dream taking shape—a growing wildlife reserve, a vision for conservation education, and a commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities while supporting the rewilding of Olienhout Game Reserve.
Cavin became the first person to believe in that vision.
Rather than spending his days in a traditional classroom, he became part of a living conservation project, gaining practical field experience while contributing directly to important wildlife management activities.
During his course, Cavin experienced unforgettable moments, including:
- Tracking an aardvark in soft release using telemetry
- Setting up and monitoring camera traps
- Discovering an active aardwolf burrow
- • Establishing ecological transects
- Assessing veld condition and habitat quality
- Witnessing the reintroduction of giraffes to Olienhout Game Reserve
Experiences like these are what make Kukama Wildlife College truly unique.
Learning Through Conservation
At Kukama Wildlife College, education goes beyond theory.
Every student contributes directly to real conservation and wildlife management projects taking place on the reserve. Whether collecting field data, monitoring wildlife populations, or assisting with habitat restoration, students become active participants in South Africa’s conservation future.
Learning with purpose creates skills that last a lifetime.
A Year of Incredible Growth
Looking back, it is remarkable to think that only one student began this journey in July 2025.
Today, Kukama Wildlife College has successfully trained 17 graduates, while our current intake of seven students brings the total number of students who have joined the Kukama journey to 24.
For a young institution, this represents an incredible achievement.
None of this would have been possible without the students who placed their trust in us, the families who supported them, and the partners and friends who shared our vision.

Upcoming Wildlife Training Opportunities
Field Guide Course – Starting 13 August 2026
Our next Field Guide Course begins on 13 August 2026.
Designed for aspiring field guides and wildlife professionals, this course combines practical bush experience with hands-on learning in a real wilderness environment. Students build confidence, develop practical skills, and prepare for careers in conservation and ecotourism.
Applications remain open, but places are limited.
Wildlife Research and Monitoring Course – November 2026
The story that began with Cavin continues this November.
Our Wildlife Research and Monitoring Course provides students with practical experience in:
- Wildlife telemetry
- Camera trap monitoring
- Wildlife surveys
- Ecological transects
- Habitat assessments
- Field data collection
- Species identification
- Ongoing wildlife monitoring projects
Students don’t simply learn about wildlife research—they actively contribute to it while working alongside experienced conservation professionals.

One of Kukama Wildlife College’s long-term goals is to create opportunities for passionate young South Africans who dream of working in conservation but may not have the financial resources to pursue formal training.
Through our sponsorship initiative, individuals and businesses can help provide deserving students with practical education, valuable experience, and life-changing career opportunities.

Looking Ahead
One year ago, one student arrived at Kukama.
Today, 24 students have become part of our story.
As Kukama Wildlife College and Olienhout Game Reserve continue to grow together, we remain grateful to every student, supporter, family member, and partner who has helped make this journey possible.
