From Study to Safari – A Month of Milestones
November at Kukama Wildlife College has been one of those months where you can feel the energy shift — the classroom focus has been intense, the fieldwork has been buzzing, and every day brings the students one step closer to becoming fully fledged guides.
Classroom Dedication
Our students have been working incredibly hard this month as they push through their FGASA theory modules and workbooks. The classroom has been alive with questions, debates and the kind of quiet determination that tells you they’re taking their studies seriously.
Every late-night revision session and early-morning quiz is proof of their commitment — they’re not just learning for marks, they’re learning for mastery.
From Theory to Field
The dedication in the classroom has been matched by excitement out in the bush.
Our students have officially begun guiding — stepping into the field and experiencing the thrill of sharing sightings and stories in real time. Watching them apply what they’ve learned, identify species, and communicate confidently with guests has been a proud moment for us all.
Their growth this month has been remarkable — every track, bird call and behaviour they interpret builds not only knowledge, but instinct.
Night Training – The Bush After Dark
Night time at Kukama comes alive in a different way. This month our students headed out for a frogging session, listening, searching, identifying and learning how amphibians act as indicators of ecosystem health. Moving through the bush at night with only torches, sounds and senses to guide them is a powerful experience — and for many, one of the most magical parts of training.
When the sun goes down, the small wonders come out. Students also went scorpion hunting with UV lights, learning about behaviour, safety, and why these glowing little creatures play such an important role in the ecosystem. It’s another reminder that the bush never sleeps — it simply changes rhythm and guiding means learning to read both day and night.
FGASA Exam Preparations
With theory now almost wrapped up, final preparations for the upcoming FGASA theory exam are underway. The focus and camaraderie among the group have been inspiring. There’s a shared sense of “we’ve got this” — along with a few well-deserved nerves!
After the theory exams, students will head to Maloba Game Reserve for both their practical assessment preparation and their official FGASA practical assessment. This phase is always one of the most rewarding — filled with excitement, self-discovery, and those proud moments of realisation:
“I can’t believe I’m almost a guide!”

This month has reminded us once again why we love this journey — watching our students push through the tough theory, light up in the field, and start to realise what they’re capable of. It’s in the mix of nerves, excitement and those “I did it!” moments that guiding begins to take root.
Each intake reminds us that learning to guide is more than a qualification — it’s a transformation of awareness, confidence, and purpose. We are so proud of what this group is achieving.
