Kukama Wildlife College: 2025 Reflections and Welcome to Our 2026 Field Guide Students

by Nikki Meiring | 8 Jan 2026

A Year Completed, a New Journey Begins

As 2026 unfolds, we pause to honour a year that has already shaped lives, built confidence, and deepened a respect for the wild that can never be unlearned.

The past year at Kukama Wildlife College was one of growth — not only in skills and knowledge, but in awareness, responsibility, and connection to the natural world.

Reflections From the Bush

Our students experienced learning the way it’s meant to be lived — hands-on, immersive, and real. From sweeping Maloba landscapes and unforgettable wildlife sightings to farms and gardens that stirred memories of home, each week brought moments that stayed long after the dust settled.

One of our students, Anlea, shared:

“This week in Maloba was amazing — breathtaking views and wildlife sightings that gave me goosebumps.”

Her final assessment game drive marked more than an evaluation — it marked confidence earned, decisions made, and professionalism taking shape.

“Amazing drive, a perfect drink stop, and of course Field Guide Coffee for my guests.”

When The Bush Teaches After Dark

The bush never sleeps — and neither does the learning.

Night drives revealed a world many never get to see. Encounters with elusive species like the aardvark and aardwolf became unforgettable highlights, while close observation of larger animals, including buffalo, turned into powerful lessons in reading body language, assessing risk, and remaining calm and respectful in wild spaces.

Photography slowed the pace, sharpening focus and attention to detail.

“Never been this close to nature. Milo and braaing stick bread under the stars — it doesn’t get better than this.”

As black-backed jackals and rufous-cheeked nightjars called through the night, students drifted off reminded that the bush is always speaking — if you know how to listen.

From Christiaan & Nikki

“To every student who walked this journey with us — thank you. Your dedication, curiosity, and respect for the wild are what make Kukama special.”

Welcome to the 2026 intake

With the year behind us, we now look forward — to new faces, new stories, and new journeys about to begin.

To our 2026 students:

Welcome to Kukama. The learning is real. The bush is ready. And your story starts here. At Kukama, the wild remains the greatest teacher.
